skin maps
skin maps is a site-specific performance in dialogue with Tishan Hsu’s solo exhibition at MOCA Toronto, Interface Remix. The performance investigates the topography of kinaesthetic response, interweaving paralinguistic communication pathways within a multi-channel soundscape. Composed by mapping the terrain of Hsu’s work, Liaw creates a multi-sensory language of sound and movement. Embodying shifts linking human and technological landscapes, skin maps unravels, wrings, and fragments visceral temporalities of in-betweenness.
Liaw’s work leans into complicated and intimate narratives that intersect her interdisciplinary practice in contemporary dance performance, new media, and film with her Hakka-Chinese diaspora and queerness. As a method of retracing oral histories and heritage, she views the body both as a recorder and record keeper.
